Review:

This is my first Dakota Cassidy novel, and I'm ecstatic to say, "Thank fucking God, because it is freaking awesome." Excuse my French. Kiss & Hell is definitely going into My Favorite Pile--for so many reasons. Now that I look back, I realize that the first half of the novel's setting is in Delaney's East Village, New York home. Plus her store, where she makes her seances for hard-earned cash. Somebody's got to feed those six tongue-lolling mouths. Clyde stumbles upon Delaney right in the middle of a very crucial money-crisis seance. This beginning their humorous, heartfelt, frustratingly dramatic frenzy of a relationship.

A month. All they have to perform the impossible. A month where "Clyve" Atwell is to make Delaney fall in love with the idea of getting all her desires come true by him before making her off herself with the revelation of his unlife in Hell. Of course, that was what was supposed to happen--before Clyde with a d came along and switched assignments. Now they have a month to convince Hell it's really Clyve making Delaney fall in love, not Clyde. And figure out why Clyde ever became a demon, when he and every probable detail of his supposed life clearly states otherwise. Doesn't it? Or is the investigation going to rub a little close to someone's *cough* Delaney's *cough* past? And that doesn't even include Marcella--might as well call her the she-devil, Kellan--Delaney's brother also being mentioned in the Underworld. The cause for Lucifer's untimely reappearence in Delaney's medium life being that hopeless, terrifying night fifteen years ago. Usually, the jumping-to-conclusions, and the keeping-secret-schemes-to-oneself is what frustrates me to no end. It was indead the same case here, but, frankly, I've learned that is waht keeps you going, reading. What really baffled me was Delaney's strong-willed, good-humor nature, albeit at some unappropriate times--like talking about your bf's explosion to smitherings--throughout the whole book. You can tell she uses it to sort of mask some under-the-surface feelings, but that's just who she is, how she's been reduced to after so long in isolation. Another thing I admire about Delaney/Dakota is her sense of music and TV show references--which pretty much got me singing that I also love Andrea Bocelli and Michael Buble (blame my mother), and will look into "Ghost Whisperer" with J-Love.

Author Info: All I know about Dakota Cassidy is she thinks I'm direct (and she has joined the penny-sized club) and that she likes my comebacks, and I have the tweets to prove it. Neener, neener, neener.

Sneak Peek Saturday: IF I STAY the MOVIE! (Edited)

I was wondering when I could post this up, but couldn't come up with any oppurtunity and I had forgotten about Sneak Peek Saturday, duh. Whatever. Did you know that they are making an If I Stay MOVIE! Just guess how I found that out--and who's the director--Catherine Hardwicke! Review:

In this fast-paced novel of the cosmic world being balanced between light and dark, Madison Avery has become a pawn in the grand scheme of things--and she doesn't know how big a pawn she is. Barnabus, her light-reaper "teacher" skips out for less than forty-eight hours with his boss, and that's all it takes for Madison to get the ball rolling into more trouble than her death and stealing-of-the-amulet originally cost. There is deception around every corner, and the crush and guardian angel that she's come to name are the only she can trust for that time. "Mad Madison" always accused of being the oddball and trouble-maker, finds it no easier to deal with the popular crowd once she's dead. Except, maybe taking some bad shots of Queen B in all her sweat-stained track gear glory.

In Once Dead, Twice Shy, you get a deeper sense of Madison's kind-hearted, wild heart--even if it only tends to beat when she's scared or panicking, and that is fairly often. You also find out the real "meaningful" purpose as to why Kairos--dark-reaper--specifically targeted her in the first place, and then again after death wasn't enough to accomplish the putting-back-together-fate process. Besides the wit and adventrous-battling streak, there is a sark-worthy humor, in which I found some substitutes to my usual profane babbler-mouth. Son of a dead puppy; Oh, for cripe's sake; What the devil; there are a couple others that I cannot remember and equally love. There is also hinting of romance here and there, and a good measure of finding oneself and not trying to be like everyone else to fit in; that I know you won't want to miss...

Grade: B

Review:

It is the saddest/happiest book I think I have ever read; and it's beautiful all at the same time.

Can I just say, I love body instruments and that this is the smoothest played-out book I've read in a long while. Seriously; and no, I am not going to compare it to a baby's bottom--though it would be strangely accurate. Just going through Mia's memories and experiences spent with her closest and state-side loved ones is so comparable to my own that, I'm thinkin' the author knows her readers--she knows what might frustrate a girl her whole life without anyone else knowing it. If I Stay radiates so much feeling--whether it be love, lust, friendship, kinship, or that powerful feeling she gets during performances--when Mia goes over different points of her life.

If I Stay is definitely going into My Favorite Pile. It's witty, familiar, and sincere in so many ways, that it will not disappoint you. I seriously wish that more YA authors could have that connection between reader and character. If I Stay makes you think more curiously about the eternal questions we all struggle to answer, even if it is not up to us: Live or Die? The pros and cons. Why me? Makes you think how secure and stable you really are living and being in your own life.

Grade: A+

Forever...by Judy Blume

There's a first for everything.

When you build up something in your mind -- really imagine it, wish for it -- sometimes, when it actually happens, it doesn't live up to your expectations.
True love is nothing like that.
Especially not for Katherine and Michael, who can't get enough of each other. Their relationship is unique: sincere, intense, and fun all at the same time. Although they haven't been together all that long, they know it's serious. A whole world opens up as young passion and sexuality bloom.
But it's senior year of high school, and there are big changes ahead. Michael and Katherine are destined for another big "first": a decision. Is this the love of a lifetime, or the very beginning of a lifetime of love?

Review:

One thing you must know is that this is my second time reading this whole book. Granted they were different editions, but I couldn't really tell the difference--besides the cover, of course.

The dialogue sort of gives you insight that the first edition was written in the seventies. Of course, I didn't actually belive that the first time I read the edition above. Katherine is pratical, but she's also somewhat of a romantic. Guess I should give you a heads-up now, before you read read it. There is some sexual content, very mild language--pretty much explains the seventies, doesn't it? But, hell, what do I know, I was born in the 90s. In fact, that's what makes it more cherishable to me, the book I mean.

Katherine's story is mostly about her experience and love relationship with her boyfriend, Micheal. It lacks, for me, a bit of depth between the characters' devotion for eachother, lacking emotion here and there. It is in first person but by the narration, it knid of makes me feel like it shouldn't be. Mostly because the characters in general play a big part in this one girl's first love experience. And at the first real challenge, first real seperation, where there was other people involved, makes Katherine question the difference between first love and true love? We all have our first love,--whatever and/or whoever it may be--does that mean you'll be together forever...

Recommended to all teens, all ages, because we should all be prepared--good Lord, I sound like my mother.

Grade: B-/C+

Totally Killed It

Persistence of Memory by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes

Amelia Atwater-Rhodes's thrilling tale of love, loyalty, and illusion, the waking hours are only as safe as the dreams that came before them.

Review:

How refreshing. Somehow I managed not to skim more than three pages on this one. I think because, it was to interesting to accidently skip a detail of importance. As I told Alea from Pop Culture Junkie on a Twitter message, "it reminds me somewhat of The Host." Which seems, frankly, I was wrong about. Admittedly, the alternations in reality taken in stride are very comparable; but that has more to do with the concept of the book, not the background details, or the characters for that matter.

What's refreshing is that this specificpassage has somewhat of less,well--censor warning!--bullshit than most novels. I'm not saying this one's any better than the rest, in fact, it lacks a bit emotionally; but it does not "kid-around", "beat around the bush", whatever you want to call it. There are different species--such as vampires, shapeshifters, and "Triste" witches--in this fantasy novel, but the author gives it plain out, albeit a bit subtly, what their abilities are.

Artistically, this novel is pure poetry, I would say; despite the preference of Edgar Allan Poe's "A Dream Within A Dream"--which is one of my favorites, and makes perfect sense to this particular context--right before the Prologue. Her specific subtle details make you image every blade of grass to the shade of a character's hair color.

Time to hunt. Time to run.

Grade: B+

Leftovers by Laura Wiess

Review:

Blair & Ardith. Two life friends telling a two-perspective story, from the transition of junior high--which ends with ninth grade, allegedly--to the battle that is high school. There is intent and there are consequences, and in the story you will learn how to get one done and take "precautions" against the other. Unlike Such a Pretty Girl, I did not read all of Leftovers--actually I skipped a good chunk of the middle section of the book, only to look back on the crucial details. But, also unlike Red-headed Stepchild, I did it--not because I couldn't wait till the end, though that was part of it the reason, but--because the frustration and confliction between the main characters were weighing me down.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to any hard-steel YA readers, though it has a bit of sexual content--but you kind of have to be prepared for some emotional baggage, you know? The author--Laura Wiess--was undoubtedly brilliant in catching the essence of the characters--every last one of them. If you thought Such a Pretty Girl--if you've read it that is--was spectacular, then I would recommend this novel/story in a heartbeat.

Review:

Okay, I have a confession to make, I didn't read the entire book. I mean, just anticipating from the tidbits held back from various characters, you know that the secrets, and unshared information will only get worse, right?

Sabina Kane has to be filled with the emotions of an empath at a funeral from which the deceased was deeply loved. Such rage, sadness, frustration overall was damn consuming for the times I cried for her fate, literally. (Okay, this may be a bit over the top, but give me a break, I haven't slept all night).

To say that the research done to create this novel was undoubtbly different, would be like saying a work of Picasso is neat. Neat! Damned if I didn't know the backstory on Lilith and Cain! I do now....Jaye Wells is a creator of the arts; no matter how many times you just want to throw the book down because you think you just can't take it anymore.

Sabina only knew about her heritage, her lineage from the tidbits her Grandmother was willing to share. After a month of going after an ambiguous man, her life and fate and destiny are taked in a whole oppistie direction.

If you can't take frustrating or guilt that the protanganist will throw at you, like someone I know--me--then this is not for you. If you can read between the lines and read the whole plot of the book, like someone else I know--me, again--then you'll absolutely love it! Confusing? I know; I, seriously need to sleep or drink some caffine... Whichever, I need to do it before I fall out of this chair... (Why's the computer screen tilted? Crash! Ow...)

Review:

Some authors fast-forward through years, other few months, but Jocelynn Drake only skipped a few recovery hours from the very end of her debut-novel Nightwalker to continue the series in Dayhunter. Just hours after the carnage with the naturi, Mira and Tristan are already hunting and trying to overcome as much of the after-shock of the battle; to confront their next challenge, The Coven. In many ways this sequel canters around Mira's and Danaus's "relationship"; but there are still a bundle of memories that Mira cannot recall from Machu Picchu or from her human times, without a little shove of her past; read Rowe. Now that Rowe has become somewhat of an obstacle in Mira's fight for survival, there is no questioning the connection he bears, with Mira's memories.

In Dayhunter you grasp more of a background of the some of the character's that have a place in The Coven's game, mostly though: Mira, Danaus, and Rowe. Like from the synopsis on the back cover, you get to find out what Danaus truly is besides human; and it's nothing Mira initially anticipated. As I mentioned before, there are events in this novel that mainly center around the hunter and the Fire Starter, and that effects their "relationship" in a way that: if one were to become furious about a certain happening or because of one specific person, the other would sometimes unintentionally put out the "fire" to the other's rage.

I have to say that in this novel of dark pleasure, blood and violence, that there are many sides to deal with, when it comes to being a nightwalker. For example: "the complete lack of remorse" Mira feels after a bloodbath in Venice, the joy she feels of an act "laughing like a madwoman struck by the moon." How can she compare that to what she thought she knew about what it took to just survive? To having something that would have horrified her to do, now be a constant happening. To not have your conscience there, when you thought it would be there the most, nagging at you. Now it's missing; and it's disappearence is what petrifies you the most, because without having to think about facing the consequences...What exactly is going to tell you when you've crossed the line from sanity to becoming a "madwoman"?

The series does have a sort of double-meaning to it, also. In this particular sequel you get a deeper sense of Mira becoming just a weapon and the ability of not just taking care of her own survival, but also of the creatures she has now sworn to protect with her life. I would say it isn't possible for this book to be stand-alone, because you will need to have a sense of history before going any further into the series.

My review leaves a lot left to desire of the novel but not nearly enough as to what the book has to offer.

Coming Back

Now I know that I haven't posted reviews in somewhat of a time, but I'm coming back because I have no more excuses left to hide behind. LOL. Forget school and finals, forget moving back to my hometown; summer break is here and I intend to celebrate it every way possible. My first review coming back would be Dayhunter, and I have a feeling that you're going to like it and end up buying the book, if you haven't already. Not because my review's that good--I'm not that cocky--but because the book is; itself and the series is one of the best I've read so far. I've already started the review and only have a bit left of Dayhunter to go, so it will be coming out soon, watch out for it.
On a side-note, this is going out to Brooke @ Brooke's Reviews: You're book will be in the mail soon now that it is summer I have a lot of time on my hands....
